Our Approach

High standards and regional approach promote stability | Operational excellence

In the world of energy generation, FPL Energy stands out - for its conservative, thoughtful approach to business. We subscribe to

  • high professional standards
  • financial responsibility to our parent company and its shareholders, and
  • excellence in all that we do.

High standards and regional approach promote stability

We focus on four main criteria as we develop, build and operate our facilities, including

  • integrity and strong personal and business ethics
  • "clean" energy generation that is respectful of the environment
  • operational excellence and
  • community support.

Our portfolio of facilities totals more than 15,500 net megawatts of generating capacity. We have a presence in 25 states.

What's important to note, however, is that we emphasize "sensible" growth and diversify our generating assets by region and fuel source.

Expertise in many areas

By drawing upon expertise among FPL Group companies, we maximize our mutual potential and capabilities for the benefit of all.

Under this business model, FPL Energy successfully draws on its own ranks for

  • development experience
  • power generation expertise and
  • energy marketing and trading skills.

It can tap these same skill sets found within other business units in FPL Group, as well.

This enables us to

  • maximize the value of our power plants through operating improvements
  • focus our energy marketing and trading activities on optimizing the profitability of our assets, rather than on engaging in speculative trading, and
  • acquire compatible independent power development projects and generating assets from other companies when the "fit" is a good one with our existing geographic and fuel-mix profiles.

Operational excellence

Drawing on its world-class operational skills, it is not surprising that the FPL Group's "best practices" approach has resulted in its industry-leading positions. For example, in 2006:

  • The company dedicated one of the world’s largest wind facilities, the 735-megawatt Horse Hollow Wind Energy Center located near Abilene, Texas, which features 421 wind turbines.
  • Duane Arnold Energy Center and Seabrook Station, both nuclear power plants, had impressive performance with 551 and 485 consecutive days of uninterrupted operation, respectively.
  • A re-tubing project at the Solar Energy Generating Systems (SEGS) in California’s Mojave Desert is underway that will improve the plant’s efficiency by increasing the solar megawatts by approximately 13 percent over the next 20 years.
