Community

Our goals | Sharing information | Our commitment

Building strong partnerships in our communities is critical to the success of every FPL Energy project. Because community dialogue is a vital component in establishing and maintaining our relationships, we start a dialogue with residents early in the project development process to introduce the project and solicit early feedback on our proposal. This relationship continues long after our projects are completed.

Our goals

FPL Energy works to

  • establish a cooperative relationship with the community
  • listen to our neighbors
  • share information
  • ensure our proposal fits the interests and priorities of the community and
  • maintain an on-going relationship with the community long after our projects are completed.

Sharing information

In addition to talking with residents, we meet with

  • elected and appointed officials
  • civic associations
  • environmental groups and
  • other community organizations.

We share new information, as it becomes available, through a combination of

  • community visits
  • public meetings
  • open houses and
  • local media relationships.

Our commitment

As evidence of our commitment that we advocate continued community benefits:

  • FPL Energy is partnering with the KidWind Project to bring the science of wind energy into classrooms throughout Texas. The goal of this innovative project is to introduce teachers to the benefits and wonders of wind power through hands-on science activities that are challenging, engaging and address state and federal science and technology standards. Teachers will be able to take what they learn in hands-on workshops into their classrooms thereby exposing hundreds, if not thousands, of students to wind energy.
  • Another community partnership was formed with Texas State Technical College (TSTC) West Texas to educate and train students in wind turbine technology. FPL Energy will assist TSTC West Texas with its curriculum by offering subject matter experts and faculty adjuncts; allowing opportunities for participants to interact with FPL Energy wind experts, on and off campus; providing paid internships within FPL Energy wind operations; and working with the college to secure the equipment and other resources necessary for laboratory facilities.
  • FPL Energy’s nuclear power plants have community outreach activities, including area science fairs and coastal cleanups. For example, Seabrook Station in New Hampshire holds an annual Day of Caring with United Way agencies in which plant employees volunteer on projects that make a difference in the lives of children, families and seniors in the Seacoast region.
  • Many other FPL Energy facilities sponsor local community events; host students, girl and boy scouts, and community groups on energy center visits; and make energy presentations to local schools and community organizations.
