What is FPL Energy?
FPL Energy is one of three operating companies
within FPL Group, Inc. Headquartered in Juno Beach, Fla., we
are
among the nation's most disciplined wholesale generators
and a leader in producing electricity from clean and renewable
sources. We are the nation's leader in wind energy generation.
We also develop,
build and operate electricity-generating facilities fueled by natural
gas, solar energy, hydroelectric and nuclear power.
What is FPL Group?
FPL Group, Inc., is one of the nation's largest
providers of electricity-related services and is nationally known
as a high-quality, efficient and customer-driven organization. Its
principal subsidiary, Florida Power and Light Company, serves nearly
eight million people along the eastern seaboard and southern portion
of Florida.
How many employees
work for FPL Energy?
More than 1,700 employees work for the company.
How does FPL Energy
view environmental stewardship in its operations?
We believe in working toward responsible solutions
for reliable energy in all that we do. Regardless of the type of
fuel we use to generate electricity, we strive to minimize environmental
impacts. We pride ourselves in complying with the spirit (not just
with the letter) of the environmental laws that govern our operations.
Because of this strong commitment to environmental stewardship,
our company, our parent company, FPL Group, Inc., and our sister
company, Florida Power & Light, have been repeatedly honored
for our efforts.
What is FPL Energy's
business strategy?
We continue to successfully execute a business
strategy of
- profitably growing a diverse portfolio,
based on fuel type and geographical locations;
- focusing on clean energy generation; and
- optimizing our assets through
- operational excellence
- sound business management and
- conservative marketing and trading practices.
What is FPL Energy's
portfolio?
Our operations are focused on several regions
across the U.S. and reflect diverse fuel sources. This diversity
of geography and fuel sources helps FPL Energy to manage its
power
generation business more efficiently and economically, even when
energy markets are volatile. We currently have more than 11,000
net megawatts of generating capacity (2003).
What is FPL Energy's
position in the development of wind generation?
Wind is the nation's fastest growing source
of power and a profitable business for FPL Energy. We are the world leader in wind energy generation, producing almost 40 percent of all wind-generated energy in the U.S. in 2004. Approximately
25
percent of our generating capacity is wind-powered, representing
more than
2,900 net megawatts.
How is FPL Energy
positioned in the use of renewable energy sources?
FPL focuses on clean energy, with a significant
amount of energy produced from renewables. Our company
- built nearly half of all new wind-generating capacity in the U.S. in 2003-2004
- produces nearly 40 percent of the nation's
total wind-generated electricity
- operates wind-related energy centers capable
of providing more than 2,900 megawatts of energy
- owns and operates the nation's largest wind
farms and
- operates the world's largest solar
energy facilities.
Why did FPL Energy
add nuclear energy into its fuel mix with the purchase of the Seabrook
Station?
We acquired Seabrook Station in New Hampshire
in 2001, which strengthened our competitive position in the Northeast
and provided an excellent complement to our existing portfolio in
the region. FPL Energy now owns and operates a diversified fleet
of nuclear, oil, natural gas and hydroelectric facilities in the
region. Seabrook is providing a significant safe, low-cost and reliable
power supply for FPL Energy to market in conjunction with the rest
of our Northeast capacity.
