FPL Energy enhances its industry leading wind energy portfolio
JUNO BEACH, Fla. - FPL Energy, LLC, a subsidiary of FPL
Group (NYSE: FPL) and the nation's largest producer of wind energy,
today said it is in the process of adding approximately 600 megawatts
(MW) to its existing wind energy portfolio through the addition
of new facilities in New Mexico, California, Iowa, West Virginia
and the Dakotas.
The new energy centers include:
- New Mexico Wind Energy Center, a 204 MW
facility located in eastern New Mexico. Output will be sold to
Public Service Company of New Mexico, with commercial operation
expected in 2003.
- High Winds Energy Center, a 150 MW facility
located in northern California. Output will be sold to PacifiCorp
Power Marketing Inc., with commercial operation expected during
the summer 2003.
- North Dakota Wind Energy Center and South
Dakota Wind Energy Center, a combined 80 MW of wind generation,
with 40 MW in each of the Dakotas. Output will be sold to Basin
Electric Power Cooperative, with commercial operation of both
projects expected by the end of 2003.
- Hancock County Wind Energy Center is a 98
MW facility located in northern Iowa. Output will be sold to Interstate
Power and Light Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Alliant
Energy Corporation, and several local cooperatives and municipalities,
with commercial operation expected by the end of 2002.
- Mountaineer Wind Energy Center is a 66 MW
facility located in northern West Virginia. Output from the facility
will be sold to Exelon Power team, with commercial operation expected
by the end of 2002.
"Today's announcement signifies further progress on our strategy
to profitably expand our generation portfolio through the addition
of wind power facilities. We will continue to look for opportunities
to expand our wind portfolio to meet the growing demand for clean,
renewable energy across the country," said Jim Robo, president
of FPL Energy.
In addition to the development projects, earlier this year, the
company acquired 123 MW of wind assets located in Texas and Pennsylvania
from National Wind Power. The company also expects to complete a
37 MW expansion of its Stateline Clean Energy Center, located on
the Washington-Oregon border, during the fourth quarter 2002. Output
from this facility will be sold to PacifiCorp Power Marketing, bringing
the total output of the facility to 300 MW.
FPL Energy is the nation's leader in wind energy, with 26 wind
facilities in operation in nine states. The company is also a leading
independent producer of clean energy from natural gas, solar energy
and hydroelectric power, generating more than 80 percent of its
power from clean and renewable sources. It has a total of 78 facilities,
with nearly 5,500 megawatts of capacity in operation in 15 states.
