FPL Energy's Calhoun Energy Center declared fully operational
JUNO BEACH, Fla. -- FPL Energy, LLC, a subsidiary
of FPL Group (NYSE: FPL), today announced full operation of its
668-megawatt, natural gas-fired power plant in Calhoun County in
northeastern Alabama.
Electricity generated at the new power plant, which will have the
capacity to power approximately 500,000 homes in the region, is
being sold primarily under contract to Alabama Power Company, a
subsidiary of Southern Company.
"We are pleased that the Calhoun Energy Center is now fully
operational and able to provide Alabama Power with a clean source
of energy for its customers," said Jim Robo, president of FPL
Energy.
The new clean energy facility, named the Calhoun Energy Center,
operates as a "peaking" facility. The facility will operate
primarily during periods of high electricity demand; for example,
from mid-morning to early evening in the high heat and humidity
typical of Alabama summers.
Construction of the simple-cycle combustion turbine facility began
in October 2001. The site is located in Oxford, Alabama. During
construction the plant employed up to 350 people and has a full-time
staff of seven.
"In addition to providing clean energy, the Calhoun Energy
Center will benefit the region through the addition of new jobs
and additional tax revenue," Robo added. "We appreciate
all of the support we have received for our company and this project
and look forward to being a member of the Alabama community."
FPL Energy is a leading independent producer of clean energy, including
natural gas, wind, solar, hydroelectric and nuclear. Wind power
represents approximately 24 percent of the company's portfolio,
with more than 80 percent being fueled by renewable or clean-burning
sources. It is a subsidiary of FPL Group, Inc., nationally known
as a high quality, efficient and customer-driven organization focused
on energy-related products and services. Its sister subsidiary,
Florida Power & Light Company, serves more than 4 million customer
accounts in Florida. Additional information is available on the
