Environmental Stewardship

Working at FPL Energy’s hydroelectric facilities means more than generating electricity. In fact, the company was selected as a recipient of the 2005 Outstanding Stewardship of America’s Rivers award for its loon management project in Maine from the National Hydropower Association.

The company is involved in a number of activities that support the environment or relate to recreational uses of the rivers where FPL Energy plants are located. For example

  • FPL Energy is involved in several eagle projects associated with our hydro projects in partnership with the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
  • FPL Energy biologists are involved in work undertaken by a coalition of environmental groups, government agencies, fishing groups and business organizations to save the native trout in Maine’s Rapid River.
  • Loon management work has been conducted on FPL Energy projects since 1985, including the installation of nesting platforms deployed in more than 80 loon nesting territories to monitor and maintain the species.
  • Fish “elevators” have been constructed at a number of FPL Energy hydroelectric facilities that allow salmon and other native species of fish to be lifted to reservoirs above the dam to native spawning areas, helping ensure the species’ continued survival.
